SEO IS SELECTED TO THE S&I 100 INDEX!
SEO has been named one of America’s top-performing nonprofits on a new giving platform: the Social Impact Exchange’s S&I 100 Index. The Index features nonprofits that address the country’s most pressing issues in education, health, youth and poverty. Each of the 100 organizations has been rigorously screened for proof of impact and is only included if it has the ability to expand. This is the first-ever broad index of U.S. nonprofits that have evidence of results and the potential to grow.
We are proud to be selected based on the results of SEO Scholars. In 2012, 100% of our Scholars graduated and were admitted to college and 87.3% were admitted to colleges in the top three Barron’s selectivity categories (most, highly and very competitive). The average GPA of the SEO College Scholars is slightly higher than a B and 80.14% graduate in four years (95% graduate in six years). The U.S. six-year college graduation rate is 57%.
We are hoping to expand SEO Scholars so that more low-income public high school students can see their dream of college graduation come to fruition. Please help us share the good news with others who are looking to invest in a nonprofit with a proven impact.

SEO Scholars Class of 2012 College Admissions
Congratulations to the SEO Scholars Class of 2012! After spending more than 720 hours in SEO classes during your high school years, you are seeing the fruits of your labor. All of you will be attending college this fall, with 87% admitted to schools in the top three tiers of Barron’s categories of competitiveness. These colleges include Amherst, Syracuse, Yale, Colby, Lafayette, and Boston University. More than $1.5 million in scholarships and grants have been awarded to your class for the first year of college alone, demonstrating that many Scholars will graduate with little or no debt.
On January 28, 2012, the SEO Scholars program in New York held orientation for 127 new ninth graders and their families. Welcome! You learned about the challenging but rewarding educational journey you are about to embark upon, while gaining a broader sense of our SEO values. We hope you are excited. We were thrilled to welcome this record-size class, but with more than 1,000 applicants from across New York City this year, having to turn away so many deserving and motivated students was not easy.
Each winter break, SEO College Scholars return to New York for three days of workshops:
- Academic success skills
- Planning strategies
- Campus adjustment
- Connecting your major to your career
- Cover letters
- Interview skills
- Cultivating relationships
These are combined with career panels where students learn from professionals in different industries, as well as presentations by representatives of several competitive national internship programs. THANK YOU to all the SEO alumni and other volunteers who made the 2012 Winter Retreat a success!
